It was one of the first days of summer. I remember summer being a little brighter than usual that year. We had spent some time along the riverfront enjoying music and drinking beers. The sun had started to set slowly making a gorgeous panoramic view of the sky over the horizon. It was some vibe. We decided to venture out away from the party and walk along the banks of the beautiful inner harbor. The music began to fade away slowly as we walked away from the liveliness of the party into the quiet and scenic stillness of the evening. I offered her my hand. She smiled cutely and tucked her hand around my elbow as we walked. It was a beautiful evening. After a while we reached a deck from where we could see the setting sun. It was a calming view. We had seen many such sunsets together at one point in our lives… Nonetheless, it felt nice to be in her presence today after a long time. I realized such moments with her would be limited. I was moving to a different city and so was she. We were all in the transitory phase of our life. That phase in life where everyone is looking to settle down, buy a house, or get a better job somewhere else. From the deck, I saw a flock of birds flying back from the open sky… I kept looking at them realizing we were just like them… trying to find our nests after exploring life in the open sky. I stopped for a moment letting myself get carried away by that thought… feeling the void that came along. Somehow, that thought induced a strange feeling within me… something that I hadn’t experienced before. It wasn’t romantic, not even nostalgic… maybe transic, if that’s even a word. I looked at her for a brief moment, taking a mental picture of her smiling face. She looked back at me for slightly long, perhaps taking a mental picture of me, and then asked “Can I hug you once for good?”
There is an end to every story and more often than not we don’t know when the last goodbyes are. Seeing her today, I got a feeling of emptiness within me… that feeling when you look at your empty apartment for one last time before leaving. It’s a different emotion, I don’t how to explain it… I just know how it feels. I was glad I met her today for this encounter made me aware of a strange emotion that was hidden somewhere beneath the heaps of other emotions within me. This feeling of emptiness was bitter sweet and yet it made me reflect on the transitory nature of this phase of life… and how life unknowingly leaves behind certain people and quietly navigates itself ahead. Most people jump directly from one phase to another without stopping for a second to notice and amaze this transic emotion that life sometimes offer. I was glad that I experienced this unusual feeling within me, and it was because of her. I realized if you ever feel like spending time with someone, or feel like talking to someone intimately, then don’t consider so much, just go. You never know how your equation will be with them tomorrow, or how the dynamics of life would’ve changed tomorrow. If meeting someone is going to uncover some of the unexplored emotions within you, then trust me, it’s worth the shot!
